Bridges Out of Poverty
During the last half of 2009, OPEN M entered into an exciting direction as it relates to our Family Development Program.
We have been working with Summit County Health District starting a program called Bridges Out of Poverty as a part of
the Summit County 2010 initiative. Bridges Out of Poverty is a program which works to provide a team support system
for people in poverty so that they can begin to move out of poverty. It is an exciting opportunity for OPEN M to make a
very positive impact on people’s lives.
The design for this program comes from the initiatives known as “Bridges Out of Poverty” (AHAProcess.com) and the
“Circles Campaign” (Movethemountain.org). These two programs have joined together and formed a coalition with the goal
of eliminating poverty. It is an effort that combines a person’s individual responsibility and the community’s responsibility
to end poverty.

"For years, I have been practicing pediatrics in neighborhood clinics which primarily serve low-income families. But it was
not until I had my own "aha!" moment at a Bridges Out of Poverty workshop that I began to better understand poverty and
what my patients were up against. So many missing pieces of the poverty puzzle came together in my mind. Besides
adjusting some of my own practices when caring for families in poverty, now I am a much stronger advocate for change in
our policies and procedures in delivering healthcare to those in poverty."

"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing
therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show
to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer it
or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again."
