Children

Our presence in the inner-city dictates that our programs place special emphasis on helping to decrease crime in the
area, protecting the children who are most vulnerable. Much of this work is accomplished in cooperation with the public
safety forces, local schools, neighborhood groups and in conjunction with other existing programs.

For the 2008/2009 academic school year OPEN M's Education Department is collaborating with the Akron Area YMCA
to offer programs in tutoring in various subjects, assistance with homework, mentoring, life skills workshops, peer
mediation and more.  The programs objectives are to raise academic standards, help students recognize and develop
individual talents, recognize his or her academic and leadership capabilities, introduce students to positive adult role
models, and create opportunities to continue community involvement for businesses and other organizations.

CLUB Z TUTORING

Behind) will assist in the areas of reading comprehension, OAT test preparation, free diagnostic testing, ADD/ADHD/LD
— and gain exposure to positive role models as well.  These are qualified tutors that meet at the OPEN M
Neighborhood Center on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

Y.E.L.L.  (Youth Educational Learning League)

L.I.T.  (Leaders In Training)

every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

All students will have the opportunity to earn Y.E.L.L. dollars and with these
dollars they will be permitted to attend the Monday field trips.  These field
trips are planned for the group to meet every last Monday of the month where
the mentors will receive $25.00 to spend on each student.  The outings will be
attended by the students with his/her mentor.

DIAMOND LADIES CLUB
This is a pre-teen club for females ages 12 - 17  (Teen Challenge collaboration with YMCA) that meet at the OPEN M
Neighborhood Center on Fridays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm .  This program focuses on abstinence, improving
socialization skills, career preparation workshops, tools to enhance educational study skills, dealing with peers and
peer pressures, problem solving and more.   We explore making healthy choices, choosing positive role models and
building our self esteem.   The ladies are exposed to topics of educational goals, parenting (through the Flour Baby
project), photography, making positive choices,  friendship, cooking, sewing, managing money, grief/loss &
attachment, and parent/child relationships.   Through involving parents, positive role models, guest speakers,
community project field trips, and the committed talents of both men and women these Diamond Ladies are given the
opportunity to
shine into successful adults.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT DAY CAMP
For four weeks each year, we provide a comprehensive recreation program for over one hundred inner-city children.
Staffed by teen-aged and adult volunteers, the children are given breakfast, lunch and snacks while following an active
schedule of field trips, sports, crafts, games, music and meeting new friends.

Persons are invited to "
Sponsor-A-Child for Camp", Click Here for sponsor form.  With a modest donation,
caring people can sponsor a child for our summer camp.  The children send pictures and regular notes to their
sponsors as a way to share their experience and to say 'thank you'. Parents and sponsors gather on the last day to
hear the children tell their stories and to celebrate the time away from the street.

enrichment through the experiences of learning.  The programs  incorporate a strong partnership of school, family and
community members that collaborate and contribute to the growth of students as they mature into caring, competent
and responsible adults.
