Food Pantry In 2008 we saw the economy go into a downward spiral. Our food pantry processed 2,399 referrals providing a 3-day emergency supply of food to a total of 6,253 adults and children, which equals 56,205 meals.
Our shelves are stocked with items from several different sources: the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank (which we pay a fee), individuals and organizations. The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is the main source of many staple items. Late in 2008 our School Committee of Hope was formed with a goal of contacting area schools to encourage these schools to hold food drives for us throughout the year. In December 2008 seven school donated 7,727 pounds of food! With the assistance of these schools, other groups and individuals we can rely less on the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank as our primary source of food.
Located in our Neighborhood Center, the OPEN M Pantry is open during the week from Monday through Thursday 11:30 am to 2:00 pm and provides emergency supplies to families whose stocks are running short. Contact Info Line, Inc. at 330-376-4859 for eligibility requirements and registration.
Hot Lunch For not more than thirteen or less than nine working days at the end of each month, when the need is greatest, many individuals come to us for a hot lunch. These meals are prepared by volunteers from our Covenant Churches, groups and organizations, and are served at our Neighborhood Center. In the Summertime, OPEN M provides a mid-day meal for up to 300 individuals each day. Many of these individuals are children who are missing the daily breakfasts and lunches supplied by the public schools during the school year. (We do not open our doors for hot lunch during the month of July due to the fact that we our providing Summer Day Camp, which the campers are served both breakfast and lunch. We also do not serve hot lunch during the month of December because we use this area for our Christmas Gifts of Love program.)
In 2008 over a 99 day period 17,436 meals were served to an average of 175 individuals each day. (In 2007 over a 104 day period 15,627 meals were served to an average of 150 individuals each day.)
Mountain of Food Giveaway The third Friday of each month, except December, we partner with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank to distribute a Mountain of Food to any Summit County resident that comes to us in need (no referral needed). The giveaway starts at 9:00 am and continues until 11:00 am or until the food runs out.
